Copy Cues Club #4

Hey [FIRST NAME GOES HERE],

Well done for having great taste in newsletters.

Today's copy lesson comes from Houston we have a problem by Luke Combs.

But I still feel like I landed on the moon
'Cause it ain't got you
Houston, we got a problem

β€‹πŸŽ§ Listen to it on the Copy Cues Club playlist

What does it teach us?

Luke Combs shows us that there's nothing wrong with being a copy cat by using the famous line from Apollo 13 (covering both a film and song reference in this newsletter!) It works because:

✨ it creates instant recognition and connection

✨ it adds extra layers of meaning to the text super succinctly

✨ it can position your brand as relevant

✨ it can encourage people to share and engage with your content

Make it work for you

To take advantage of other people's smart lines, think about:

✨ Seizing a moment

Oreo really won the 2013 Superbowl when an unexpected blackout occurred and they tweeted this:

By responding quickly, Oreo showed they could respond to current events and make the most of the opportunity.

✨ Lightening up content which could feel a bit heavy.

National Rail did this feel when they had a campaign featuring Paddington Bear (who's named after the station he's found in). The campaign simply read "Even Paddington has to buy a ticket" which is a lovely, light hearted way to remind people to buy their tickets before boarding a train.

✨ Building connection with your audience over a shared bond.

Everyone knows I love Taylor Swift. If you don't, I'm genuinely a little surprised. Hilariously, people now seek me out just to have Taylor Swift chat (and I'm here for it). I know this is a memorable thing about it so I leant into it with my Christmas out of office:

🎡 On my playlist:

🧢 Knitting

My new hobby from 2024 is serving me well this winter. 10/10 recommend if you want a cosy hobby.

πŸ“Ί The Traitors (UK_

This is one of my favourite TV moments of the year. Eminently quotable, unbelievably watchable and suitably tense. You can thank me later.

πŸ“– The Force of Such Beauty

Definitely a top 10 book for me last year. If you found yourself weirdly fascinated by the Kate conspiracy theories last year (which obviously turned out to be false), you'll love this fictional version.

🎀 Catch me irl

We all know I love any excuse to chat. You can find me talking all things website at the ITI Parenting and Carer's event or chatting brand voice at ELIA Together 2025. See you there?

Thanks for being part of the gang. I'll be back in your inbox next month,

✨ Bex ✨

πŸ’ŒP.S. I'd love you to send me your favourite song or movie so I can use some copy from it in a future newsletter and give you a shout out. Just hit reply and let me know. I promise I'll read and reply to every email.
