[Creepy whisper] Merry Christmas πŸŽ„

Copy Cues Club #3

Hey Reader,

Sorry if this email means you just lost Whamaggedon.

Today's copy lesson has a little festive twist and is from Last Christmas by Wham!

"Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away.
This year, to save me from tears,
I'll give it to someone special"

What does it teach us?

Wham make their lyrics super memorable by contrasting two things, in this case it's time.

✨ It makes the story relatable: we've all had our hearts broken and had to pick ourselves up again

✨ It creates an emotional connection: by placing the story in time, we're moved from nostalgia and sentimentality to resilience and hope

✨ It creates a sense of movement, highlighting the change in emotion

Make it work for you

To make your copy as memorable for your readers think about:

✨ Using time to tell a story

By focusing on past or current experiences and contrasting it with what the future could look like, readers can imagine a different, more compelling alternative.

Debeers nails this by contrasting the average cost of an engagement ring with the idea that marriage (and diamonds) are forever.

✨ Contrasting emotions

Wham compare heartbreak with hope, Sales for Founders does it by comparing the dread of sales with the ease of making them.

✨ Contrasting emotion with practicality

Instead of contrasting heartbreak with recovery, Wise, formerly Transferwise, contrast the confusion of exchange rates with a transparent solution

⭐ Hanging out with some of the best ladies from the Female Copywriters Alliance

Getting to meet some of these people in real life was so much fun. Get yourself a group of work pals as supportive as these girls.

πŸ“š Slow Productivity by Cal Newport

Cal explores how to work more effectively and avoid burn out by doing less, working at a natural pace and obsessing over quality. A great book to read over the Christmas break!

πŸ“½οΈ Wicked

It was pretty great and a masterclass in film production. The Dancing Through Life number is incredible. But John Travolta trying to pronounce Idina Menzel still lives rent free in my mind so I was slightly gutted he didn't have a cameo.

Thanks for being part of the gang. I'll be back in your inbox on the 13th January,

✨ Bex ✨

P.S Is it too soon to say Merry Christmas?

πŸ’ŒP.P.S. I'd love you to send me your favourite song or movie so I can use some copy from it in a future newsletter and give you a shout out. Just hit reply and let me know. I promise I'll read and reply to every email.
